Essential Care Basics

💧 Watering

Most indoor plants prefer soil that's slightly moist but not waterlogged. Check the top inch of soil before watering - if it feels dry, it's time to water. Overwatering can be more harmful than underwatering. Yellow leaves may indicate too much water, while brown crispy leaves may suggest too little.

☀️ Light Requirements

Bright, indirect light works well for most houseplants. Place them near windows but avoid direct sunlight that can scorch leaves. Low-light plants like snake plants can be placed 6-10 feet from windows. Rotate plants weekly for even growth. If leaves are pale or leggy, consider moving closer to light source.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Indoor plants generally prefer temperatures between 65-75°F. Avoid placing them near heating vents or drafty windows. Many tropical plants benefit from higher humidity, which you can provide by misting leaves weekly, grouping plants together, or using a pebble tray with water beneath the pot.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

Remove yellow or brown leaves promptly to keep plants healthy and prevent pest issues. Wipe dust off leaves monthly with a damp cloth to help them absorb light. Trim leggy growth to encourage bushier plants. Propagate cuttings in water to grow new plants.

Plant-Specific Care Guides

🌿 Monstera Deliciosa

Light: Bright, indirect light near east or west-facing windows

Water: When top 2 inches of soil are dry (weekly in summer, every 10 days in winter)

Humidity: Prefers 60% or higher - mist leaves weekly or use humidifier

Notes: Support with a moss pole as it grows. Aerial roots are normal and help the plant climb. Wipe large leaves monthly to remove dust.

🌿 Snake Plant

Light: Low to bright indirect light - extremely adaptable

Water: Every 2-3 weeks in summer, monthly in winter - let soil dry completely

Humidity: Average household humidity is fine - no special requirements

Notes: Tolerant plant suitable for beginners. Can tolerate neglect. Overwatering can cause issues.

🌿 Golden Pothos

Light: Low to bright indirect light - more light = more variegation

Water: When soil feels dry to touch - leaves droop when thirsty

Humidity: Average to high humidity - mist occasionally for best growth

Notes: Trim vines to maintain shape. Propagates easily in water from stem cuttings. Can grow in water without soil.

Common Issues & Solutions

Yellow Leaves

May indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Allow soil to dry out more between waterings and ensure pot has drainage holes. Remove yellow leaves as they won't recover. If problem continues, check for root rot.

Brown Leaf Tips

Often caused by low humidity, fluoride in tap water, or salt buildup from fertilizer. Try using filtered water, increase humidity around the plant, and flush soil monthly with water to remove salt buildup.

Leggy Growth

Sign of insufficient light. Plant is stretching toward light source. Move the plant closer to a window or supplement with a grow light. Prune leggy stems to encourage bushier growth.

Drooping Leaves

Can indicate underwatering or root issues. Check soil moisture - if dry, water thoroughly. If soil is wet, may have root rot from overwatering. Adjust watering schedule accordingly.
